The Lingonberry
Vacciniu, vitis-idaea,
A plant in the heather (calluna) family with leathery leaves, white flowers, and red, tart berries. Found normally in barren places in pine forests and heather moors, and in Jotunheimen National Park as high as 1800 meters (5900 feet) above sea level. L
ingonberries are considered to be one of the most important wild berries in Norway. There are found in large quantities, are easy to store, and have a variety of household uses. They contain benzoate and can therefore be stored in water or crushed in th
eir own juice without the use of preservatives. Lingonberries were earlier used in medicine. Delivering mothers drank decoction of lingonberry plants to prevent hemorrhaging, and dried lingonberry flowers were used to treat asthma. The juice was a reme
dy for fever.
